Strain: What Does This Add to Ventricular Function Assessment?

چکیده

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has advanced the role of the cardiovascular anesthesiologist and increased his/her active role and obligations during perioperative patient care. Assessment of global and regional left ventricular (LV) function consists of two-dimensional (2D) or Doppler evaluation of cardiac structures and their interaction with blood flow. The techniques used are mostly visual and subjective(1,2) thus, not always accurate or error-free. Recent technological advances in signal processing in Doppler (Doppler tissue imaging [DTI] and Doppler strain echocardiography [DSE]) and non-Doppler (2D speckle tracking imaging [STE]) enable measurement of velocities, deformation and rotation. As a result, high quality, precise, and objective information regarding regional and/or global myocardial function (some of it in real time) decrease the subjectivity of the interpretation and increase the diagnostic accuracy.

Evaluation of strain and strain rate parameters using two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients with coronary artery disease (Research Article)

The study aimed was to measure left ventricular (LV) strain using speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) for assessment of LV function. Eighty-two subjects (mean age 57±9 years) with suspected chest pain underwent two-dimensional (2D)-echocardiography before coronary angiography. Conventional echocardiographic parameters were used for the assessment of LV function. Longitudinal strain and its ...

The use of strain, strain rate, and displacement by 2D speckle tracking for assessment of systolic left ventricular function in goats: applicability and influence of general anesthesia

BACKGROUND Assessment of left ventricular (LV) systolic function can be achieved by conventional echocardiographic methods, but quantification of contractility, regional myocardial function, and ventricular synchrony is challenging. The goal of this study was to investigate the applicability of two-dimensional speckle tracking (2DST) to characterize segmental and global wall motion for assessme...

Mistaking the Map for the Territory: What Society Does With Medicine; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”

Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...

عملکرد سیستولی قلب در بیماران سیروزی کاندید پیوند کبد در مقایسه با گروه کنترل

Background: We assessed different systolic cardiac indices to describe left and right ventricular dysfunction in cirrhotic patients before liver transplantation. Methods: In this case-control study, eighty-one consecutive individuals with the confirmed hepatic cirrhosis and candidate for liver transplantation in the Imam Khomeini Hospital between March 2008 and March 2010 were selected. T...

Two-dimensional strain for the assessment of left ventricular function in low flow-low gradient aortic stenosis, relationship to hemodynamics, and outcome: a substudy of the multicenter TOPAS study.

BACKGROUND Decision making in patients with low flow-low gradient aortic stenosis mainly depends on the actual stenosis severity and left ventricular function, which is of prognostic importance. We used 2-dimensional strain parameters measured by speckle tracking at rest and during dobutamine stress echocardiography to document the extent of myocardial impairment, its relationship with hemodyna...
